Curatorial Projects

At CCAD, a wide variety of voices, perspectives, and identities continuously co-exist. Through this dialogue within our community, a vast array of experiences are visually expressed. With this in mind, the Curatorial Project’s class presents the exhibition, Assembled Identities: A Community Collection, to amplify the plurality of viewpoints at CCAD.

The Curatorial Projects class came to form a group curated exhibition that brought the CCAD community together, after the isolation we all endured while in quarantine from the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal was to bring the students of CCAD a sense of belonging while also showcasing their individuality.

As an archive of CCAD’s collective identities, this show contextualizes self within a community. Ranging from animation to craft and sewing, varying approaches to identity reveal intersections with personal and collective experiences at and outside of CCAD. The artworks present physical entanglements with the body, processes of understanding self and identity, and moments of cathartic release. We have grouped these works to address the shared subject matter and formal connections of color, shape, and design, providing broad examples of how identity is assembled and translated through the community.

In addition to the exhibition itself, the Curatorial Projects class hosted a workshop that sought to create dialogue, creative expression, and communal gathering at CCAD. We prompted fellow students, faculty, and staff to create assembled postcards using a variety of art and collage materials. The participants were asked to consider their experiences with identity and had the option to write a note to their future selves. The inclusion of the postcards in the exhibition lends an additional representation of identity while functioning as an accessible forum for discussion.
